Kyle Katarn As You’ve Never Seen Him Before

There were new games shown off at Gamescon but there were also a lot of remakes announced, up to and including Star Wars: Dark Forces.  If you weren’t around in the ’90s, or at least not old enough to have been playing PC games then you might well wonder what the fuss is about.  That’s fair, as you grew up when maps having multiple floors was the norm and not being able to look up and down is inconceivable.

Star Wars: Dark Forces was one of the first FPS games to introduce that Y axis, certainly not the first but definitely one of the originals.  It also wanted to be more than a shooter and it succeeded.  You will find much more inventive puzzles than were the norm at that point, and those characteristics all worked together to make Dark Forces very memorable.

The remake will support 4k at 120 FPS on the KEX Engine, which you’ve seen in the rerelease of System Shock Enhanced Edition and the new Quake II.  The port also means that they are redoing cutscenes in addition to textures.   The new Dark Forces will be launching on everything in the near future, though as of yet there is no price.

Star Wars’ nineties first-person shooter Dark Forces is returning in a 4K-ified remaster from Nightdive Studios, the folks behind the recent System Shock remake. The upcoming Dark Forces Remaster will see its visuals bumped up to a crisp 4K, running at 120 frames per second, along with a number of quality-of-life improvements.
