Update Feb 28 @ 10:03pm It's official, NVIDIA launches $699 GTX 1080 Ti.
NVIDIA is hosting a "Gaming Celebration" live event during GDC 2017 to talk PC gaming and possibly launch new hardware (if rumors are true!). During the event, NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun Huang made a major announcement regarding its top-end GTX 1080 graphics card with a price drop to $499 effective immediately.
The NVIDIA GTX 1080 is a pascal based graphics card with 2560 CUDA cores paired with 8GB of GDDR5X memory. Graphics cards based on this GP104 GPU are currently selling for around $580 to $700 (most are around $650+/-) with the "Founders Edition" having an MSRP of $699. The $499 price teased at the live stream represents a significant price drop compared to what the graphics cards are going for now. NVIDIA did not specify if the new $499 MSRP was the new Founders Edition price or an average price that includes partner cards as well but even if it only happened on the reference cards, the partners would have to adjust their prices downwards accordingly to compete.
I suspect that NVIDIA is making such a bold move to make room in their lineup for a new product (the long-rumored 1080 Ti perhaps?) as well as a pre-emptive strike against AMD and their Radeon RX Vega products. This move may also be good news for GTX 1070 pricing as they may also see price drops to make room for cheaper GTX 1080 partner cards that come in below the $499 price point.
If you have been considering buying a new graphics card, NVIDIA has sweetened the pot a bit especially if you had already been eyeing a GTX 1080. (Note that while the price drop is said to be effective immediately, at the time of writing Amazon was still showing "normal"/typical prices for the cards. Enthusiasts might have to wait a few hours or days for the retailers to catch up and update their sites.)
This makes me a bit more excited to see what AMD will have to offer with Vega as well as the likelihood of a GTX 1080 Ti launch happening sooner rather than later!
and $699 for the Ti
and $699 for the Ti apparently…
Something is telling me Vega isn’t going to be a slouch…i dunno
Oh wow, nice, the live stream
Oh wow, nice, the live stream isn't working for me here heh.
$699 (and possibly lower for partner cards/after the initial rush?) actually seems pretty cheap considering how close it is to Titan XP. I would have thought NVIDIA would try to push $800+ MSRP on it heh.
Yes, I thought the msrp was
Yes, I thought the msrp was going to be higher also. Its this exact “aggressiveness” (imo) in price point, coupled with the crippling of their $1200 flagship (although there is precedence), that is my source of speculation. Interesting year for pc hardware enthusiasts whatever the case
Nvidia have often done this
Nvidia have often done this before; shuffling old products downwards to make space for their x80 Ti SKU. This has the added benefit of heading off AMD’s forthcoming Vega, the top model of which would have undoubtedly been positioned to undercut the 1080, most probably by offering it at the 500 USD price point.
Pretty sure they just dropped
Pretty sure they just dropped the founders edition price.premium. no guarantee on the actual AIB pricing.
Wow just bought a gtx 1080
Wow just bought a gtx 1080 founders edition for $699 guess that is going back tomorrow and I will wait till the gtx 1080 ti comes out. I am always stupid. My computer died last week so couldn’t wait till Ryzen and bought a Intel 7600k. I guess I will be returning everything but case, power supply and ssd drive and be without computer for a couple weeks.
You are living proof that
You are living proof that luck is way more important then being smart. Thanks for sharing.
Well this is a turn around
Well this is a turn around from the normal for me. My luck is always the worst! Glad I saw it and can still take it back as I put it on my Best Buy card. Really wish Best buy had more options for stuff to build a pc. I knew Gtx 1080 Ti was coming but never dreamed that it would come at same price as the Gtx 1080 and there would be a price drop on 1080’s. Everyone was speculating $800 or more for for the Ti.I am sure with short supply and everyone wanting the 1080Ti they going for $800 or more anyhow. In a perfect world the Ryzen and Vega would come out at the same times and match Intel and Nvidia on performance at a lower price. Especially since I just bought a 32″ Hp Omen 32 Freesync monitor. I couldn’t find a 32″ G-sync monitor other then a 32″ 4k G-sync from Acer. I had tried (2) 27 inch g-sync monitors from Asus and Dell and they were to small for my old eyes. I also got a hell of a deal on 32 inch Omen for $250, but I am missing the 144 hz and G-sync.
“this is a turn around from
“this is a turn around from the normal for me”
Are you trying to say that AMD Vega is going to stomp 1080?
*Than
Way to put your foot in
*Than
Way to put your foot in your mouth, kid.
Oh wow! Yeah that’s how these
Oh wow! Yeah that's how these things always go huh? You are the reason the price dropped and Ryzen is coming! 😀 I can totally empathize becaise it seems like every single time i buy hardware almost as soon as i hit purchase and it ships the price drops! Every time! haha.
At least you caught it in time and can return them and re-buy. Good luck with your build!
Yes for those competitive
Yes for those competitive price pressures from AMD to take some of the green out of Nvidia’s high costs and keep that green in the consumers’ pockets. Even Nvidia’s most fanatical adherents can be happy about that. The Ryzen/Vega downward price pressure on the CPU/GPU market is great for all even before the AMD CPU/GPU SKU are in the retail channel and/or ready for shipping!
Downward it goes for any sky high margins from Intel or Nvidia! Thank you Team Red!
Uhm, not sure what you are
Uhm, not sure what you are bragging about or happy about, but clearly you know nothing of reading financial statements. Nvidia has much deeper pockets than AMD. They can afford it and not miss a beat. AMD can’t afford slim profit margins. Their $650 Fury X was largely a fail. Over the past 5 years, their quarterly profit margin and revenue average have been -12% and $1.2 billion respectively. What are Nvidia’s? Why thank you for asking: +14% and $4.7 billion respectively(USD).
Now, nobody wants to see AMD fail because Intel and Nvidia both need competition. However, it’s been years since AMD has invested in a new high end CPU to compete with Intel’s highly successful and market-dominating Core series. There’s a reason for that: they don’t have the pockets. So fanboys like you need to worry about your own back yard before worry about what’s in Nvidia’s back yard. Just some free advice.
So when is the GTX 1080 price
So when is the GTX 1080 price drop again??? On the Nvidia site it’s $549 and not $499. During the event he said “effective immediately”.
Good point, but as the
Good point, but as the article states, “NVIDIA did not specify if the new $499 MSRP was the new Founders Edition price…”.
Nvidia’s website is only showing the Founder’s Edition for sale. Even on NewEgg’s site, the cheapest 1080 I see is still $580. I say give everyone a few days to adjust.
If by the weekend there are still no price drops anywhere, then let’s go directly to Nvidia’s support page and start asking questions.
I’d say, the price listings
I’d say, the price listings on 1080’s won’t actually drop until the 1080ti’s are actually listed.
but even then, maybe not. I did a quick search through new egg and they’ve STILL got 980ti’s listed at $700 – $1000.

I can wait a week, but I fear
I can wait a week, but I fear this was said just for headlines and in reality will never see the light of day. People will be too distracted by the 1080Ti release and this will go overlooked by the media.
Regarding the gtx 1080, when
Regarding the gtx 1080, when does the “effective immediately” $499 MSRP price become a reality? Because as far as I can tell, it’s been two days and prices still haven’t changed.
I was able to price match my
I was able to price match my GTX1080 Founders Edition at Best Buy as the Founders Edition had been dropped to $549.Funny all other 1080’s have not dropping on price at Best Buy. Hopefully the GTX1080 Ti comes out to Best Buy in the next 15 days because that is what I have to return the card and exchange it.I had tried to get on and Pre order from Nvidia but I woke up to late and missed out.
