X Doesn’t Mark The Spot, Ryzen 7600, 7700, And 7900 CPUs

Meet AMD’s 65W Zen 4 Processors

The original Zen 4 processors all had TDPs over 100W, with some closer to 200W making them rather inappropriate for small form factor builds.  To rectify that gap, AMD have released three new processors with a 65W TDP for those looking for a less toasty build.  The Ryzen 5 7600, Ryzen 7 7700, Ryzen 9 7900 all have that same TDP, support DDR5 and ship with either the Wraith Stealth or Wraith Prism cooler in the box.

The Ryzen 5 7600 is clocked a little lower than it’s X bearing partner, 5.1GHz peak as opposed to 5.3GHz but the cache and integrated GPU remain the same.  The Ryzen 7 7700 loses 100MHz off it’s boost comparatively, running at 5.3GHz but as with the previous chip all other specs remain the same.  Finally the Ryzen 9 7900 is down to 5.4GHz from 5.6GHz but other than that matches the Ryzen 9 7900X.

Tweaktown tested all three against Intel and AMD’s latest and greatest processors, as well as some from the previous generation.  When gaming at 1080p you are unlikely to see any difference, and while the chips do well on the other tests, they aren’t quite as fast as their toasty brethren.

The prices suggest AMD considers these processors to be a different breed from the X series processors.  At $229, $329, and $429 respectively they are priced within about $10 of the CPUs bearing very similar names.  If power consumption and thermals are not a major concern you are best off with the X, but if you are building in a SFF case, these are a superior choice.

The new AMD Ryzen 65W processor SKUs open the door to small form factor PC gaming systems built on Zen 4. Here's our look at the new CPUs.
