Dump It Just Like D-Link Has! by razor512 https://pcper.com/2024/04/got-an-old-d-link-nas-devices-dump-it-just-like-d-link-has/comment-page-1/#comment-248797 Fri, 12 Apr 2024 19:08:18 +0000 https://pcper.com/?p=282884#comment-248797 This is one major reason why I do not like NAS appliance devices like this. Such devices carry a large price premium for the hardware offered, while offering rather short service life, while also often being heavily locked down so that when the company discontinues support, then the device becomes either a paperweight, or unsafe to use. There are currently 2 bay NAS appliances that are being sold for $600 and comes with no drives, and use a dual core Intel Celeron J3355 and have 6GB of DDR3L RAM, Imagine the PC you can build to make into a NAS for $600.

Turn an old PC into a NAS, and for far less money, end up with a device that will often start with support for 6-8 drives, along with options to expand via HBAs, while having the freedom to choose which software you run. Even if your current NAS software gets discontinued, the hardware will live on as you run run something else to meet your needs.

While some NAS appliances can offer unique conveniences, especially in cases where you just want a turn key solution, often times the software support ends long before the hardware gets even close to becoming obsolete. For example, there are many NAS products that can saturate a 2.5GbE connection but no longer receive security updates.

You’ve reminded me of Pole Position at our local swimming baths that permanently displayed ‘Game Over’.

I reckon I’ll be ready to bite on one of these 32″ OLED panels soon. Give it 6 months and competition should drive prices down a little.

Comment on A Pi 5 PC Or A No Name Amazon Mini Desktop? by willmore https://pcper.com/2024/04/a-pi-5-pc-or-a-no-name-amazon-mini-desktop/comment-page-1/#comment-248674 Fri, 05 Apr 2024 20:39:10 +0000 https://pcper.com/?p=282766#comment-248674 Dechromed chormebox. An Asus CN62 is a great little box. Super cheap, easy to dechrome, and easy to use as any other x86 PC. Small, limited internal expansion (already has good WiFi, video out, and USB3 ports), but it has two memory slots and a dual bus processor. As long as you’re okay with a relatively slow dual-core Haswell chip, they’re awesome. Normal barrel jack labeled 19V, but I’ve happily run them off of way less. The 5V regulation on the USB is the first thing to go at around 7.5V. So, any 9V or higher supply should be just fine. And they don’t use much power. I ran Prime95 on one to test power draw and I couldn’t get it over 15W.

Despite my love of water-cooling, personally, I’m really interested to see some of the newer SFF cases out there. I think my favorite case in the last couple of years is the Fractal Terra.

But…I have said all of that.

Point taken. I didn’t proofread the final draft as thoroughly as usual prior to sending it off to my editor.

Its a radical looking case and seems slightly large for a mid tower, as a fan of mini PC I don’t have too much to do with these cases any more but I can see the attraction, its a good looking case without being excellent as you mentioned it seems to fall short in a couple of areas.

Also, I don’t wanna be that guy but repeated paragraphs “Having said all of that…”

Thanks for the review.

Comment on TrueNAS CORE Bids Goodbye To FreeBSD by Lylieth https://pcper.com/2024/03/truenas-core-bids-goodbye-to-freebsd/comment-page-1/#comment-248645 Wed, 03 Apr 2024 15:35:58 +0000 https://pcper.com/?p=282556#comment-248645 This article HAD to be written in AI. First off, CORE will NEVER switch and be based on debian; like the title suggests. Not only that but existing jails from CORE do not become VMs in SCALE… Jails are a container and SCALE uses k3s for them; not KVM.

Comment on Lapping, Delidding, and Liquid Cooling to Tame Intel 13th Gen Thermals by derbroski https://pcper.com/2023/08/lapping-delidding-and-liquid-cooling-to-tame-intel-13th-gen-thermals/comment-page-1/#comment-248642 Wed, 03 Apr 2024 10:07:38 +0000 https://pcper.com/?p=278890#comment-248642 Hi Kent. Thank you for the review.
Unfortunately, there is one big mistake. When comparing coolers, you should limit the core voltage and/or the power consumption.
As you can see on your screenshots, the core voltage, the power consumption and the clock frequency differ from the Iceman to the EKWB. It is therefore impossible to say exactly which cooler performs better or is cooler. The EKWB with 6.0 GHz or the Iceman with 5.9 GHz? To be able to really compare these two coolers, the values must be fixed.
However, the Iceman is a really good cooler at a good price.
Best regards.

I’d use the PCIe adapter in my home desktop and the USB dock with my work computer. Until then I’m ok just using my USB to NVMe enclosures

Comment on ECSIPC LIVA Z5 PLUS Mini PC Review by Brett Hood https://pcper.com/2024/03/ecs-liva-z5-plus-mini-pc-review/comment-page-1/#comment-248562 Fri, 29 Mar 2024 00:22:33 +0000 https://pcper.com/?p=282237#comment-248562 Another good write-up Sebastian

I love the form factor of mini-PC. Having used 2 NUC’s which I highly recommend for cool and quiet PC operation and even light gaming. The ECS LIVA looks like another nice addition with solid innards and excellent productivity performance. I would also recommend getting 32GB RAM minimum to future-proof the performance & longevity of your mini-PC.

That particular GPU does not feature anything more than a 128 bit memory bus. Something like the RX 6700XT is a cut down version of the 6800 series, so instead of a 256 bit bus it uses only the 192 bits.

Comment on Apple M Series Hardware Security Flaw, Too Bad You Can’t GoFetch A Patch by John https://pcper.com/2024/03/apple-m-series-hardware-security-flaw-too-bad-you-cant-gofetch-a-patch/comment-page-1/#comment-248448 Sat, 23 Mar 2024 19:34:46 +0000 https://pcper.com/?p=282567#comment-248448 Well its out of the box now, so it now depends on what the bad guys do with it. Intel had to address the potential even though it was also consider a low risk impact. My complaint is that Apple chose to handle this in a way that ignored the past with Spectre and Meltdown. It basically has repeated the same mistakes for the sake of performance. The risk might be low but it could be combined with other types of attacks as well. Bad guys are clever taking one weakness and combining with another. Then you have the weakness of the end user. One who has been convinced by Apple that no harm can come to them. You also have a bigger footprint in the world and a common design thread with iPhone’s and iPad’s. So nobody has tested this on those devices. Clearly has a problem and a need to address it in order to have it not affect the trust of the end user.
