Pushing A Patriot Viper Xtreme 5 DDR-5 Kit Engineering Prototype To The Limits
The Magic Of Binning
While at CES, TweakTown were handed a gift, an engineering sample of Patriot’s Viper Xtreme 5 DDR5. This is not your average retail kit, instead it has hand picked Hynix ICs and is intended to show just what Patriot’s DDR5 line is capable of when everything goes perfectly. When added to their test machine the DIMMs were identified as 8000 MHz with CAS38-48-48-84 2T, running at 1.45V. Since these DIMMs should offer more than your average retail kit, they spent quite a bit of time trying different overclocking settings.
At stock settings, this Viper Xtreme 5 was quite impressive and occasionally outperformed a DDR5-8200 kit and certainly beat other DDR5-8000 kits except for a few odd exceptions. After adding a huge Pure Wings 2 RAM fan from be quiet! they proceeded to push this kit to it’s limits. While they were able to tighten the timings while keeping to DDR5-8000, what really impressed them was a completely stable DDR5-8800 with slightly loosened timings of 40-52-52-131-183 2T.
Drop by to see what that did to the performance when compared to the XMP profile.
Handed to us at CES was a set of highly binned Patriot Viper Xtreme 5 RGB DDR5 in prototype form to show what is possible when you do not impose limits.
