When You’re This Wide A 1000R Curvature Really Helps

With ultrawide monitors becoming more popular some companies, such as Samsung, have started offering seriously large displays for those looking for an immersive experience.  The Odyssey 9 is one such display, a 49″ 5120 x 1440 VA display with a 100R curvature that Techspot found worked incredibly well on this display, though as with other curved displays there can be some distortion at the edges on some programs; not when you are gaming though.

This is first and foremost a gaming display, and you will need to ensure that you have the GPU horsepower to drive it as the Odyssey 9 sports twice the pixels as a ‘normal’ 1440p display, almost 90% as many as a 4K display.  As the display can also support refresh rates of up to 240Hz for both AMD and NVIDIA users and offers up DisplayHDR 1000 as well.  The only real compatibility issue is your desk as you will need to make sure you have space for a monitor about a metre (45.18″) inches wide.

There are some unfortunate issues that TechSpot found with the monitor, flickering in HDR mode at 240Hz, thankfully not at 120Hz though and the G-SYNC Compatible G9 simply doesn’t work with GeForce RTX 3000 series GPUs at 240 Hz.   There is hope that these issues will be ironed out, but for a $1700 display it is hard to give Samsung a pass.  If you are willing to put up with these growing pains, the monitor works very well when you find ways to work around them.

The absolutely enormous Samsung Odyssey G9 is a curved super-ultrawide monitor that promises to offer the most immersive gaming experience on the market. This is a 49-inch monitor equivalent to two 27-inch 1440p displays stitched together.

I am currently using this monitor in 240hz on an RTX 3080. There is a firmware update on their site from December that will fix many of the issues though it still does have some problems from time to time it’s not nearly the shit show it was with the shipped firmware

Good to know from both of you … and I am not even a bit jealous about not having one. 😉
