VR-Zone China got hold of an alleged Intel leak, go figure, that talks about their next enthusiast processor platform, Broadwell-E. This architecture is mostly Haswell-E that has its (rated) feature size shrunk down to 14nm. Given an available BIOS, it is expected to support at least some existing LGA 2011-v3 motherboards with the X99 chipset. Like Haswell, they are sticking with a maximum of 40 PCIe lanes. We will need to wait for individual SKUs to see whether one or more models will be limited to 28 lanes, like the Haswell-E-based Core i7-5820K.

Intel claims 140W TDP, which is identical to the current three offerings of Haswell-E, for all options. The slide claims six and eight core models will be available (also identical to Haswell-E).
One bullet-point that baffled me is, "Integrated Memory Controller: 4 Channels DDR4 2400, 1 DIMM per Channel". Double-checking with the other writers here, just to make sure sure, it seems like the slide claims that Broadwell-E will only support four sticks of DDR4. This makes zero sense for a couple of reasons. First, one of the main selling points of the enthusiast platform has been the obscene amount of RAM that workstation users demand. Second, and more importantly, if it is compatible with existing motherboards, what is it going to do? Fail to POST if you install a fifth stick? This has to be a typo or referring to something else entirely.
When will you be able to get it? A bit later than we were hoping. It is expected for Q1 2016, rather than late 2015.

I’ll be surprised if they aren’t going to limit it the amount of PCI-E like they are doing the current generation of E processors. Unless it was an architecture limitation or binning issue they appear to want to differentiate their E product line like how you can get VT-d on E parts but not on the 4770K.

Lame. At this modest improvement rate it’s going to take 10 years before we’ll have the CPU horsepower to encode 4K using H.265. It’s bad enough they delayed Ivy Bridge to the point of irrelevance. Now they’re doing the same with Broadwell, which minus the iGPU part is already a trash product across the board.

Intel has made it obviously clear they do NOT care about Enthusiasts, leaving us 2 generations behind in 2016…they should scrap the whole HEDT lineup….
HEDT is a running joke and has been since they launced Ivy-E, I know for a fact Ryan has voiced the our concerns…they just don’t care….
They have to be afraid of cannibalising from high end(xeon) and low end(4 core) its ridic, they don’t know which way is up anymore.

I would say it’s guaranteed
I would say it’s guaranteed to effect Skylake, at least in the Enthusiast market, but on the other tiers it’s not likely. Because of 14nm, Broadwell being delayed (intentionally by Intel according to some), Skylake will be a rapid succession release of the Tick-Tock where Broadwell is supposed to focus more on the low-end, low power market.
I do agree, the Enthusiast market is becoming a joke. Locking the 8 core variant to $999 and nipping PCIe lanes is a joke.
Haswell-E at least offers an
Haswell-E at least offers an incremental upgrade over 4770k/4790k if you were buying a new system. for about $150 CPU/MB (+100 for RAM difference for now) more than a 4790k setup you can go with a 5820k 6-core, >2x the memory bandwidth, and also gain 8 more PCI-e lanes on the CPU.
I’d argue this is the first ‘reasonable’ enthusiast platform upgrade since the X58/original core i7’s..
Skylake-E brings PCI-E 4.0, and by then DDR4 should be parity with DDR3, and should either throw out DMI or upgrade that to a faster spec, so that’s also worth watching.
