If you were greeted by a message today indicating that your Win10 Pro is no longer activated or needs to be reactivated as Win10 Home, you are not alone. Microsoft have acknowledged an issue with their licensing servers which is having a rather noticeable effect on machines in several countries. The issue seems to arise most often on machines which were upgraded from a previous version of Windows, or installed fresh using a key from a previous version, which Microsoft has supported from the get go. The problem is unlikely to last for long, so do not start downgrading or reinstalling until we have an update from Microsoft, unless you really get off on reinstalling OSes.
It is a toss up between the link to Slashdot and the one to Microsoft Answers as to which provides the most amusment; the comments in both are everything you would expect and more!
"If you're having trouble activating your Windows 10 Pro computer today, you're not alone. Forums and social media networks are getting flooded with complaints from users who say their machines have automatically become deactivated. Users say they are having trouble connecting with Microsoft's activation servers, with some saying they are being prompted to downgrade to Windows 10 Home."

Maybe it’s better to get a Laptop that comes with the Pro Version already installed and a sticker on the bottom of the device that has a Win 10 Pro License from the get go and not some Home License that’s been upgraded to a Pro license.
Most Business Grade laptops ship with the Windows Pro OS version installed and I sure hope that Windows 7 is not sffected because I have a Few Laptops that came with Windows 7 home that I upgraded to Windows 7 Pro.
The only nice thing about the Pro Upgrade license is that they are supposed to be transferable to a different device once the device that the Pro Upgrade is installed on has had the OS downgraded back to the home version. So those Pro upgrade licenses are transferrable under windows 7, and who knows about 10 and that trainwreck.

Just so you know. We encountered this issue with Lenovo Think Series and Windows 10 Pro that wouldn’t activate right out of the box….stating it needed to be downgraded.
Lenovo support was not helpful by any means (not unusual in Canada)
Microsoft expected an upfront payout to even talk to us about the issue.

For the past few weeks I’ve been dealing with this exact issue. Today (after reading this post) I tried once again the option “troubleshooting” on the activation, and success! windows 10 PRO was activated!

I had a customer just go through this with a brand new OEM system I sold them for use in their Business. It came with Windows 10 Pro and everything was fine when it left my shop. I get a call the next day saying when they went onto windows 10 pro it said they were no longer activated and needed to activate before they could continue using their PC.
I went over and sure enough it would not activate until I entered the key on the side of the case and even then it was a bit iffy but it finally worked. The strange thing is this is the first time I have ever seen Windows 10 just go limp mode and cause it so they could not do anything.
Normally it will take your picture away turn the desktop to black and have something written on the bottom right side and you can continue on your merry way this time that was not the case. My best guess is MS either changed something or it was because it was a Pro version of Win 10 but even then I have seen other Win 10 Pros just continue on and work fine.
