Just Delivered / Just Picked Up is a series of posts where we talk about things we have recently purchased. Think of it like a mini-review for first impressions.
A major goal of my current upgrade cycle was to finally buy a high-end desktop monitor.
In the end, I decided to go for the 27-inch Samsung CHG70 QLED Gaming Monitor. It’s listed as HDR although that is at a typical brightness of 350 cd/m2. It supports FreeSync 2 although I have NVIDIA graphics. Its native resolution is 1440p although that is at 144 Hz, and I put a lot of value into high refresh rates.
That arm is a bit… unnecessary.
Thankfully, it's entirely unnecessary if you wall mount.
A weird design decision is its stand – it’s way too deep. It has a bit of a crane shape, versus a vertical slider like my BenQ, so it eats about 13 inches. There was barely enough room for my keyboard in front of the monitor, and my desk is 23 inches deep (plus an extra inch between it and the wall). If you can wall-mount it, which it is capable of, then that’s a complete non-issue. In fact, the entire stand can be completely removed if you intend to wall mount it, which is nice.
In terms of color? It’s beautiful.
Of course, one of the first things I do is go onto YouTube and look at the various videos with highly-saturated colors and deep blacks. It looks a bit blown out in some bright scenes, almost like its gamma is off, although my current calibration effort is limited to “set in Cinema mode”. I’ll need to play around with it someday.
Interesting… what kind of
Interesting… what kind of toilet paper did you recently purchase?

I just got this same monitor
I just got this same monitor a month ago, and apart from that stand it works a charm.
Unfortunately I have a fairly small desk, and so after splurging on the monitor I then had to splurge on a monitor mount so I could gain back a ton of desk space. Not sure what the hell Samsung were thinking with that stand..
It seems like I’m not alone
It seems like I'm not alone with my stand complaints…
Let us know how well hdr
Let us know how well hdr works (or doesn’t work) on this display. I would like my next display to be high frame rate and hdr, but I don’t think display tech and infrastructure is really there yet. It sounds like it is a bit of a crap shoot. The best solution for computer displays seems like it would be to map the SDR into hdr and just leave the display in hdr mode. They need to increase the brightness on the SDR content from the standard 100 nits, though. 100 nits is just too dim. It would be nice to be able to configure that brightness or other mapping functions.
I am usually running Linux, so I don’t know if hdr will work in any form. I just bought a samsung qled (the q6f 55 inch model from costco) and hdr YouTube videos look spectacular. The WiFi on samsung TVs is very flaky. It drops and will not reconnect frequently. This seems to be a common problem with no solution. I was going to buy the Sony x900f; I probably should have got that instead. I am tempted to return it. The picture looks great, not as good as oled, but I think the quantum dot is worth some extra cost. This computer display seems a bit dim. Hdr is often completely misunderstood. I have seen many YouTube videos where people get it completely wrong. Support for Dolby vision is a bit ridiculous since consumer TVs can’t really get close to hdr 10 yet. 300 to 400 nits seems a bit low for hdr content though. TVs are getting close to 1000 nits. I was thinking of using a 40 inch class hdr tv as a computer display if one exists at 4k.
literally just tried to buy
literally just tried to buy this from the local Fry’s but out of stock
the stand was the only thing that i did not like about it after looking at it in person
